No, they went back to the best battle system. Besides FFXII wasn't that much different to ATB, in fact it was pretty similar, and it still was soemwhat turn based (only masked in an apparent real time). The only recent main FF that didn't use ATB in any way was X

 

 

wich is kind of ironic because it had the best battle scheme than any other FF! or any other rpg for that matter

 

To me it has the worst one after the first FF. FFX-2 has the best one and FFXIII improves on that.

 

The big difference that FFXII had was that it was impossible to give commands to each party member (only if you played strictly turn-based without gambits -> gets very boring after a while), it was like KotOR, but with the stupid gambits that took the classic party control away. I hope FFXIII lets you control each character individually and depending on the time gauge of the party execute party commands. Simply an improved Chrono Trigger battle system, that´d be awesome.
