I could just imagine how much bigger the gen could be with more exclusives contributing to specific platforms, regardless of personal tastes. I believe exclusives strongly keep the industry afloat, see Nintendo :) The Wii differentiates itself with it's exclusives - peripherals/features/games.....look what it's done for the industry, ushered in new gamers EVERYWHERE in EVERY form :) |
I agree with you on the "keeping the industry afloat" thing, but that still only indirectly affects gamers and that is through a possible chain of events down the line. On a game by game basis, the only times we sould be hoping for exclusivity is when a game is actually going to take advantage of the inherent strengths of a certain console, and I don't think Katamari Damamcy Tribute is going to be that game the same way I don't think the last Katamari game for 360 took advantage of that console and could/should have been ported over to allow more gamers to get their hands on it. Games like Killzone 2, Gears 2, Heavy Rain, etc. I get why they are exclusive even outside of the first party ties. They are trying to push hardware as far as it can go in one way or another. Unfortunately for every exclusive that does this, you have others like Too Human or Motorstorm: Pacific Rift that don't push a damn thing and in many ways fall behind technologically against multiplatform competition.
