Hard as fuck though..... I sank hours into the card game trying to do it, though I did get some cool cards. 
Though I read it's easier to get the card you needed before you leave the Balamb area since the rules become brutal in the other areas and the card doesn't show up that much from the characters that can use it and from personal experience, you DON'T want to try and get the card you need outside of Balamp on disk one......
I eventually said screw it and waited till the second disk where the rules were much nicer and the card I needed showed up a lot more.
