The N64 had better 3D graphics than the PS1.  Many RPG's of that era (including FFVIII) used tricks to make you think they looked good.  Of course there was pre-rendered cinema scenes, which took advantage of the disk format, but I am not talking about that.  One trick used by FFVIII, FFVII and the Resident Evil series is a picture background with a fixed camera angle.

That is beside the point.  The SNES era was the last generation based on 2D graphics.  It has what I consider to be good looking 2D graphics.  The PS1/N64 era was the first generation based on 3D graphics.  It has what I consider to be bad looking 3D graphics.  I will take a good looking 2D game over a bad looking 3D game anyday.

I still think FFVIII looks great and if they used tricks to make the mind make it think it looked that good, well, then they accomplished their goal.

if you can't tell what a pre-rendered backround or an FMV is then yea, sure.  I can't believe people still argue about this stuff, N64 had many games that looked better than FF8, my guess is you never played them.

I only played Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.

Heavens to Murgatoids.
