The N64 had better 3D graphics than the PS1.  Many RPG's of that era (including FFVIII) used tricks to make you think they looked good.  Of course there was pre-rendered cinema scenes, which took advantage of the disk format, but I am not talking about that.  One trick used by FFVIII, FFVII and the Resident Evil series is a picture background with a fixed camera angle.

That is beside the point.  The SNES era was the last generation based on 2D graphics.  It has what I consider to be good looking 2D graphics.  The PS1/N64 era was the first generation based on 3D graphics.  It has what I consider to be bad looking 3D graphics.  I will take a good looking 2D game over a bad looking 3D game anyday.
