I update firmware via PC - it's much quicker. Download the update onto a memory stick while playing, update from stick when ready and get back to playing quicker.
I normally find downloading updates on my PC is much faster than on PSN.
If I'm not doing much I'll update from PSN anyhow as its not that slow just not the fastest option for me.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
