its a hard question , but i personally didnt like Mario and thought SNES was more of a casual console back then dont get me wrong it had tons of deep games like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger , but i would go with PS1 cause it diffenetly changed the way we think about gaming.

For every SNES classic RPG  (except Super Mario RPG obviously)  there was a PS1 version that outdid it in every way.  For FFVI there was FFVII, for Chrono Trigger which was great there was Chrono Cross which was exquisite, for Tactics Ogre there was Final Fantasy Tactics, for Ogre Battle there was improved PS1 Ogre Battle.  It goes on, but in short the PS1 is really where JRPGs hit their peak.

Also the PS1 was home to a revolution in sports games (remember the first time playing football on the PS1?  It was FINALLY really worth paying attention to), the best fighting game of all time (Tekken 3), the best racing series (Gran Turismo) the start of the greatest third person action series of all time (Metal Gear Solid), the begining of survival horror juggernaut Resident Evil (as well as RE3, my all time favorite RE game) and so much more.

I mean I know a lot of people remember the SNES fondly, but it wasn't anywhere near the revolution the PS1 was.  Remember how awesome it was having voice through all of Metal Gear solid the first time?  Being taunted by Mantis who read you memory card and made fun of your game choices?  Remember how awesome memory cards were period with you finally being able to take your character and save to a friends house or rent a game more then once and maintain progress?

The PS controller also remains the best controller on the market for most games.  The PS was also home to the dual shock analog sticks (which were an awesome revelation at the time), built in rumble and much much more.

The PS1 lasted for a decade at the top for a reason, it was just an awesome machine through and through.  From about 1997 till 2002 it was just the alpha and omega of gaming like no system since the NES.

Also the Genesis was pretty competitive with the SNES when it came to non RPG games.  If you wanted to play the good games you had to split between Genesis and SNES a lot of the time (with the SNES often having pussified versions of the genesis games, see Mortal Kombat 2).  The PS1 finally broke the barrier of political correctness Nintendo had imposed on the industry.  I remember the first time I saw Cid say shit in FFVII or heard someone say it in wing commander it was such a shock after playing Nintendo systems for 12 years.  We would never have the breadth of awesome adult games like Bioshock and Grand Theft Auto on consoles if Sony hadn't broken the political correctness stranglehold Nintendo had.
