Play Chrono Trigger on a SNES emulator on you PC. It´s not cliched, with freedom, not convoluted story. It also has a nice pacing between gameplay, cutscenes. Once you play that and like it you could move to more "stereotypical" JRPGs. I don´t recommend you FF1-5 to start with since they are a loop of fighting-cutscene-buy new equip-net dungeon. Same thing with DQ, it´s traditional battle system is generally seen as old nowadays. FF6 on the other hand is good for starters.

I don´t recommend you any JRPG considering the consoles you have. ToV, LO, TLR are not good for starters. SO4 would be the only JRPG you could try, though it´s a bit anime-style, doesn´t have the freedom the first 2 in the series had and is slightly cliched. Though it does have many optional stuff to do, much more than just extra dungeons.

What are you talking about? ToV is a great way to start getting into the jrpg genre because of its battle system. SO4 seems like a great way to get into the jrpg genre as well though. You should just get both and see where that gets you.

I think I'm going with ToV because the battle system seems bad ass and the story is emotional (I guess)

If you end up liking it, make another topic. You'll get recommended a lot (lot) of Tales games at that point, but it will at least mean you lke JRPG combat and storytelling enough to start getting into the heavy stuff.
