Need some help with the optical cable

Hi I just bought the optical cable for my ps3 which im going to connect to my sony home cinema player. So ive been trying to put the cable in but it wont stay put, any slight movement and it falls out, the cable with some round plastic cover around, so i need some guidance. Cheers.
