As of 3/20/2009, the PS3 has 21.4% of the current generations' market share. Those who have one are happy to have it, and they're not stupid for owning one.

However, relative to the other consoles, the PS3 is doing quite poorly, regardless of its price point.

Compared to the Wii yes,Compared to the 360 no.

Profit wise PS3 is doing very poorly compared 360 or Wii. Sony has already lost everything they got from PS2 and next stop will be profit they got from PS1, if this doesn't end somehow. Soon it would have been better not even enter the console business in first place. :P

Too late, they burned through the PS1 profits while establishing the PS2.  The data we have from DFC intelligences (via Dave Perry by way of joystick here: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/the-sony-reciprocal-ps3-losses-surpass-ps2-profits/) talks about the PS2's 5 best years, not the console's whole life.  Of course, the extended effect of the brand makes it worth the while, as it has helped to establish multimedia formats and extend brand and technology strength to non-gaming divisions.  Plus, the PS3 can still recover, though it certainly hasn't lost the sort of money MS has on Xbox.l
