Since I have a hard time believing you'd think anything sony does is bad technology I'm not sure how valid your brief opinion on the matter is. UMD, like Blu-Ray was a format Sony had ambition to use as a media format outside the PSP as a convenient portable DVDlike format. However as UMD movie sales stagnated movie Companies one by one began dropping support of the format and in time Sony themselves had no choice to cut support down to basically nothing. Their new president has even made comments that it was a lost cause and foolish idea to charge more for a format that did less than DVD.
