If anyone in the video game industry knows a thing about wasting time and money, it's Dave Perry. Really, no one in their right mind should be listening to his bullshit. It's a fucking miracle he still has a job.
Really, if you get rid of the UMD then you have to distribute your games exclusively by download. Who thinks that's going to work for handhelds in this day and age? Any suckers around?
The handheld world does not opperate like Perry's little fantasy world. Most of the people buying games for their handheld system are, guess what, going to stores to buy the things! Yeah, they aren't exactly lining up to download games for their handhelds. Hell, evidence suggests that console gamers aren't either* and it's WAY easier for them to do that. Unless he's suggesting that Sony gives their games away for free, and he's not, his belief that downloaded content is the way for the PSP to go is asinine to the Nth degree.
Really, I understand that developers want the cheapest medium possible. And the one that the developers don't actually have to produce is by far the cheapest. It sure is in HIS best interest to reduce the costs of deliving content by as much as possible. But the fact of the matter is that the market isn't ready to go that direction yet, even if David Perry's wallet is.
Limiting sales to people with internet access is suicide for Sony. And if he thinks it's a great marketing idea, there isn't really anything to stop him from moving in that direction. Except, of course, for the fact that he doesn't get a pay check unless he can abuse Sony's platform. If he really beleived digital content was the future he'd stick to it whole heartedly, but his future is just where ever he gets the biggest check from. And for as long as human beings do not have internet access available for free across every inch of the globe, then the biggest source of money is going to be derived from a physically transmitted good.
The man is a moron, his opinion is worth less than shit, and if this topic exists for anything but laughing at the man it's a failure. Really, he doesn't know anything other than how much money he earns at the end of the day, and none of us in the real world gain a damn thing by giving his greed the respect of a real idea or opinion.
*Note: Or, at least, not in numbers larger than the people who still want their piece of plastic and tin foil and the plastic box and paper book that comes with it.
You do not have the right to never be offended.
