Using the mother lion as the parents and the child as the cub, it would be more fair to equate it to a mother leaving its young in the middle of the savannah while it went to go catch food.
If something happens to the cub, shouldn't the first question be "where was the protector?"
This kind of thing does happen in the wild where a wild animal will happen upon the young and eat one or two of them. Then who do you blame?
