Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are awesome. I think those were the first two anime series I've seen.
Ghost has a bit of a mech thing going on, and Bebop is a little old now, so you might not like them. There are so many great series out there, I really don't know where to start. 
Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2: No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?
