I can attest to this. A friend and I had been flirting back and forth for a while, so one day I just asked her out.........it was pretty awkward for a little while, when she said she only thought of me as a friend. But things are back to normal.
So, go ahead and ask her out. If she is your friend, you'll should be able to power through, if she's not interested........and if she is, good for you.
