I agree with Sardauk, the "fixes" addressed in the article are exactly what the PSN needs (in addition to more PS1 classics or PS1 BC, any chance of me being able to play FF8 on the darn thing).
I don't think PSN is fail though. My only gripe with it is the servers thing, I HATE playing a game of Call of Duty with an entirely Australian userbase then randomly an American pops in and the server changes to suit the american, giving every other player the red bar.
As for to pay vs not to pay. For me, I wouldn't buy live now (I did once before) given that sony is offering online multiplayer (which is the most basic and important thing) for free, BUT I can understand why people want to/do.
