What I love about this whole discussion is that defenders of FF7 are using the tactic of "oh people that love RPGs don't talk about Pokemon, they talk about FF7" but if you look closely to their definition of who is the "people" they tend to refer to people that either in some way or another all communicating through forums such as this and/or other videogame related forum.
They ignore the "mainstream" market and ignore it and dare to claim that "FF7 will be remembered as the title that advance the genre and Pokemon even tho it has sold more can't say that." Well, these fanatics are wrong. Of course it was pokemon the one that popularized the genre, of course it was Pokemon that make it simple for new players to understand how the JRPG genre is played, yes it was Pokemon the one that raised these same people that help grow these new users to assimilate to FF7 a lot easier. Do you think if people that have never played JRPGs would have picked FF7 and understood it if it hadn't been for Pokemon? Hell no. For that, Pokemon is the most innovative, the most well known, and the one that will be remembered the most. The FF7 fanatics are the niche market, not the Pokemon players, but in the fanatics world their beloved RPG is the one and only to have started it all.
