Regards the HD with MPEG4 if you can just record the station then you should be able to view it later - copy the recording to the home menu and try to play if from there as it has different decoders from PlayTV.

If that fails copy to an external HDD and try playback on your pc.

I found mplayer on linux could decode even recordings that PlayTV was unable to play back it's self and claimed were corrupted as did the home menu. - But They seem to play back perfectly with mplayer.

Play TV just records the data stream off air to a file , but the PS3's decoders dont seem to be as robust as the mplayer media player in linux.

Perhaps PlayTV does not support decoding MPEG4 at all, but it may still be able to record it to a file for playback later , and that may be able to play back on the PS3 home menu or on a PC.

In AU the HD is MPEG2 and it works fine - probably a patch to add mpeg4 decoding will fix the HD in other places.

Actually HD is broadcast in the UK via either Sky or freesat.... (Sky having about 20 HD channels from the hundreds of digital channels on their service)...  as a consequence PlayTV is a waste of time in the UK, always was.. I even had to have a discussion with some sony fans on here at the launch of it that it wasnt a system seller... thats right some people here actually thought it would be.

SKY has this area stitched up and even if people dont want to pay for sky then they can buy a standard set top recorder with huge capacity for next to nothing, or a free sat version if HD is required.

Consoles can only compete (at the moment) for your TV viewing time with good movie services.

Umm..not quite a waste of time. Freeview are expecting a rollout of BBC HD channels at some point soon and Channel4/ ITV have already had trials and will be rolling out this service not long after the BBC. Others I am sure will follow.
