I don't think it is possible for JRPG's to achieve that level of acclaim anymore. The problem with JRPG's is that they are stuck in a tradition of gameplay that they can't seem to escape from. They can't innovate beyone elivating the level of graphics without turning off their fanbase. That said, I think the FF7 killer will probably be an ARPG. I think American rpg makers are getting close to clinching that level of renown. With oblivion, fallout, and mass effect all being very highly regarded I think it is only a matter of time before this happens.
