Okay, way to be technical. He was born in the British colony of Virginia. Maybe not a U.S. citizen, but he's still viewed as American in a historical light: he was a British expatriot who became one of the first U.S. citizens. Gandhi is not usually hailed as somebody from England, even though he was born in colonial India.
