Is there currently an epidemic of Tower Defense games? If so, why?

I can swear that Tower Defense games are like the latest craze out there.  Am I missing something, or is this a new niche genre that has resulted in a lot of companies putting games out that fit it?  Even Square Enix releases one for XBox Live arcade.
