You can look at the history of boardgame version of wargames to see what happens when you keep pandering to just the hardcore audience.  Somewhere between pen and paper D&D and World War II, a niche of boardgames (wargames) came out, with publishers like Avalon Hill and SPI releasing games to individuals, and building up a following.  This market started out with low complex and accessible games, and gradually got more and more complex trying to push for more "realism" or at least more complexity, that seemed to make for a game that would appeal to the target audience.

Well, along the way, the end result was that the products grew more and more inaccessible to newcomers and the niche faded in relevance.  This niche used to be so relevant that the former Kay-Bee Toys and Hobby used to stock Avalon Hill games in their stores. 

So, when you pander to the hardcore, at the expense of newcomers, you end up losing growth, which is why you see what is seen as "dumbing down" of titles to reach greater numbers.

 


No, I'd say much "simplification" just comes from moving from keyboard/mouse to controller.
