Final Fantasy VIII I'd also have put Symphony of the Night up there, but there's often quite a debate about wither or not its an RPG or not, because it melds the line between an Action/Adventure 'Metrovania' game and features a lot of RPG elements. However, since many games are now being considered straight 'Action RPGs' with near duplicate playstyles (see Odin Sphere) and most of the later games are now being labeled Action RPGs, I'd say that proves the game qualifies as such. |
If it matters, I'm of the opinion that Metroidvanias and "ARPGs" like Odin Sphere are so linear that considring them RPGs in the vein of the progenitors of this term is disingenuous. Ghastly even.
Hell I had to fight myself really hard before I even allowed myself to call Fire Emblem an RPG.
EDIT: Dude, Diablo is not a JRPG.
