Because Sony didn't have any mascots to begin with? They lost Crash, Spyro and Lara Croft because they never owned their IPs. Nintendo is the only software publisher that makes their own hardware (Sega used to), so they can do whatever they want. Nintendo also has better innovation because they know what to do with their hardware and they don't mess around like Sony has been doing for the past few years...
