Out of all the "How XXXXX defeated XXXXX" threads, this one makes the most sense. And the answer is simple- $600.

That reminds me:

Sony's E3 Press Conference in 2 Minutes

I love how Snake shows up in Brawl at the end as if he somehow knew to abandon ship and get on the Wii instead.

OT: Sony's failures were legion:

Price - $600

Blu-ray - not percieved as necessary - therefore an unwanted luxury cost

Late to market - Gave their most direct competitor a year head start - and that's doesn't just mean 1 year of greater sales, it means games that were in development for 3 years were hitting the 360 when the PS3 was getting mediocore games like Lair and Heavenly Sword.  It mean's MS could maintain a permenant price advantage.  It means 360 will always have a greater game line-up.  It means Sony loses exclusives because 360 has a larger install base.

Ego - They pissed off a lot of fans with crap like 'People will get a 2nd job', 'People would buy a PS brick'

But most importantly...

Ignored their own damn audience!!  - PS2 WAS the casual system last gen and it was the far larger casual (or mass) market that propelled the PS2 to such immense sales.  PS3 came out at a price only the core could love, with games only the core would care about.  The casual market was ignored and Nintendo swooped in and stole them all away to rise to prominance.   Look at Guitar Hero.  The PS2 made that game.  Not the PS3 can barely sell enough to matter.
