Wii was hyped a lot before both consoles release. No matter what PS3 price was at launch Wii would still be huge. It was the cool and fun new thing you had to have.

Not in my circle of life. In my world, it was viewed as a gimmick/fad

I queued for 6 hours on launch night to get my Wii and was mocked by other family and friends when they heard I'd spent so long for a toy.  One of my friends after playing on my Wii spent 2 weeks searching before he got one after playing on mine and my mum and 2 sisters proceeded to buy one too.  The Wii was indeed just another one of those games consoles before launch but once the gerneral public started the word of mouth and the media got hold of it then sales exploded higher than even Nintendo expected.

Neither Microsoft or Sony could do anything about the Wii, Nintendo created a bigger monster than even they could have predicted at the time I suspect.

Sony couldn't have done anything about the wii but they definitely could've done something for themselves. Did you see the lines for ps3s? Do you know that people were shot for ps3s? Do you know that people bought ps3s for over $15,000? This is because they all thought it was a true successor to ps2. had it turned out that way, the ps3 won't be too far behind the wii and would've overtaken it by now in Japan. I can say this with 120% confidence.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler
