It has to be 2.5-inch SATA HDD 5400rpm and also when I upgraded my pS3 I used a standard External Hdd It didnt have any issue with formatting. Also when you turn on your PS3 it should automatically ask you to format the internal HDD if it does not then the HDD might not be compatible or not properly installed.
