They don't. It's the OT distribution that chose to go with a new version every 6 months.
Actually a binary driver could break much more often, in theory each time the kernel is updated. But the point is that not all drivers break: only those drivers who chose to live as red-headed stepchilds by only releasing binary blobs instead of being packaged in sync with the kernel.
