Graphics formerly meant one of the telltale differences between generations. But that's over now.

And graphics' purpose is not necessarily for eye candy. It's to make visualization distinct enough to allow more depth in game design. That's its primary purpose. The gloss & packaging is just the surface, the side benefit.
