Nintendo will get shtick for whatever they do.
If they make games similar to the previous iterations on N64, they get told they are remaking old games (despite these games being more different than most sequels by 3rd parties)
If they do something original with those characters as he is suggesting they will be told they are whoring out their characters and they should keep them at what they do best.
