repairing a broken 360

No I was going to fix it myself lol. If you can do something, its always cheaper to do it yourself then have someone else do it. I also heard microsoft wont fix 360s that are out of warranty, Not even for money. I am not sure if this is true, and I believe my friends is past that date.
