And why wouldn't they? Someone might believe them, and it would help whether or not they have a good launch. It was "the PS3 is going to blow everything else away, and it's going to be here for a long time".
We increasingly see it used as a defense against a lack of games. Now it's "the PS3 is pretty unimpressive right now, but it's going to be here for a long time". The tone is very different.
