World Exclusive First Look From GAMEPRO'S March issue

Hasta la Vista boring game sequels Terminator Salvation leads an assault of cutting edge successors for 2009 World exclusive 1st details on this ambitions new sci fi shooter that serves as a prequel to the Christain Bale film due out this May
Though Terminator Salvation is a third person shooter the development team bristles at being compared to genre poster boy Gears of War "I got a little frustrated, i guess, looking at some of the responses the game trailers." Lazouras offers. "you know, there were cover systems in games b4 Gears." he adds with a half hearted chuckle, emphasizing that the final game will probably bear a game play style that veers closer to COD than Gears. "Its's not just about getting behind some cover and letting ur team do the dirty work." Lazouras elaborates. "Terminator Salvation has a very fluid cover system, and you have to constantly move around in 360 to take advantage of the vulnerability of each enemy."
Accordingly, combat has received a tuneup to bring it in line with the vision of the films. Rather than repeatedly blasting armies of faceless soldiers from the 3rd person perspective, you'll butt heads with metal menagerie that will make your skin crawl. The film version of Terminator Salvation will add several never before seen robotic foes, including a revved up Motto Terminator and a 30 foot behemoth called the Harvester. Lazouras confirms that the game will include virtually all of the new models introduced in the film, but as will also add a host of original robotic terrors to fight , such as the spider like T7T, Two player co-op is also a heavy emphasis in Terminator Salvation. And though co-op is currently limited to split screen play the dev is hoping to add an online co-op component before the game ships this May. Watching the game in action, it's easy to see the promise behind the 2 player experience; the Resistance soldiers must constantly flank, behind friend chip away at the slower but stronger Skynet forces.
But there's more than just 3rd person shooting. The Terminator films are known for their adrenaline drenched chase scenes, and Terminator Salvation extends that tradition with a series of vehicle based action set pieces. During one mission the player is charged with shooting down a Skynet Hunter Killer aircraft using a turret mounted on the back of a speeding pickup truck. This particular chase scene slams all across a dilapidated downtown LA and impressively covers several miles of unique varied terrain as you struggle to disable the air craft's engines. These vehicle scenarios give Terminator Salvation natural highs and lows nicely balancing out the slower pace of on foot exploration and combat. Other missions will call for a stealthier approach as you carefully infiltrate Skynet facilities and avoid its cyborg sentries.
So far good but thats not to say that creating a definitive Terminator game has been easy. One particular challenge for the developers was to ensure that the iconic terminator endoskeletons remained as tough as nails, but in a way that wouldn't frustrate player. How do you make an invincible enemy that's actually fun to fight? Not an easy answer. "You're not always killing a terminator sometimes you can destroy them completely, but other times you only need to stop them temporarily." Unless you're packing some seriously state of the art fire power, you'll be forced to fight a guerrilla war with the T-600s' knocking them down with shotgun blast, using your squad mates to distract them, and dismembering them piece by piece with concentrated fire, Of course, if you don't fully destroy them it'll come crawling back for more again and again. What does it take to put a terminator down once and for all? The answer should be obvious to any fan of the films: environmental hazards.
Terminator Salvation developers are tight lipped on the specific examples of environmental hazards in the game, but considering that the film terminators were defeated through means as varied as a industrial press, a liquid nitrogen blast, and a dip in molten metal, there appear to be plenty of options for the developers to choose from. Other mysteries remain Halcyon Games is keeping awfully queit on exactly what game consoles Terminator Salvation will officially appear on, but mentioned versions for the 360,PS3, PC, Wii, and mobile platforms. Don't expect any save the princess endings, either, a fact that is sure to please series fans and followers of dark scifi stories. "No matter how well you do, by the end of the game," Lazouras concludes, "it's still a Sh8t situation most of humanity is dead and robots are still trying to kill everyone." yeah but will they be back?
Some More Stuff
For all its credentials, Skynet may be the least-evil sounding world-dominating AI ever conceived. The defense supercomputer did pancake the Earth with nukes and release an army of roboskeletons to kill us all, but we still think it sounds kind of like a British cell phone service.
Intimidating or not, you’ll fight Skynet head-on in Terminator Salvation, a game prequel to the upcoming film aimed at establishing the movie’s backstory. You play as John Connor, savior-in-training of the human resistance force as it retakes a ruined Los Angeles. In co-op, a second player joins as Blair, John’s apocalypse arm candy voiced by actress Moon Bloodgood.
Like GRIN’s other movie game (Wanted: Weapons of Fate) or a Transporter sequel, Terminator centers itself on being an attractive but straightforward third-person action title. The dev’s vision for post-nuke LA includes a lot of grassy patches crawling over a ruined cityscape, which really pops compared to the bevy of broken concrete we’ve seen in the destroyed world genre. In combat, Salvation leans on its cover system. Most encounters mean duck-rolling into protection, then blasting our shotgun at packs of flying aerostat scout ships or T-70s: crab-walking minigun bots that are one of the enemies unique to the game.
A bit of blind firing, leapfrogging between scenery, and lobbing EMP grenades, and we were on our way to the next skirmish. If you’ve got Gears of War in the back of your head, you’re not far off - Connor and Blair are accompanied by two squadmates for most of the campaign; presentation details like tapping a button to snap the camera on an explosion or event in the distance evoke Epic’s shooter more than a little.
As did the on-rails sections GRIN demoed for us. The first we saw slapped Connor behind a Jeep-mounted turret to bring a hunter-killer gunship to the ground by targeting its engines and weapon systems. On another, we stood at the back of a modified passenger train, flicking RPGs at moto-terminators with Blair while the robobikes tried to overtake our caboose. Watching our teammate fire and reload her RPG beside us made the section feel a little bit like a lightgun arcade game against the shooting gallery of speedy terminators.
