Nintendo wasn't the only console available in the 1980's but they might has well have been. Sega Master System & the Atari 7800 did basically nothing to stop Nintendo's onslaught back then (even though Sega had a good look in Europe & Latin America).
What could happen now may very well lead to a true monopoly of the videogame business should Microsoft & Sony give up on this circuit and no other competitor have the drive to enter the field. But where there's money to be made there will always be speculators. Somebody will challenge Nintendo and keep them honest.
But I have always said that Nintendo IS the business and in the end it will always come back to them. They are the very reason why the console even exists today. It really shouldn't exist and computers could have become THE game platform in the mid 1980s. The NES changed all of that & each Nintendo system after that along with Nintendo's competitors keep the home videogame console alive as a concept.
