The problem is Sony assumed the 120 million people that bought PS2 were really Playstation fans and would buy the new Playstation at any price. That was their error which has cost them this gen. They failed to realise that only a small percentage were fans. The huge bulk were made up of those who 1. followed the third party games, 2. those who are followers and buy whatever is popular and 3. those who bought it cause it was sensibly priced with loads of games (but still wouldn't have bought it with the same number of third party games if it was ridiculously priced).

This gen 1. doesn't apply much cause Microsoft has been able to ensure all big 3rd party games other than MGS4 have gone to 360, 2. It is the Wii that is cool, 3. There are two consoles that are much more sensibly priced including the 360 which has virtually identical games to PS3.

So no the fans haven't let Sony down. Sony let themselves down and let their fans down by making them pay for Sony's format war.
