Although I will say this early:

Twesterm, I've told you how stupid it is to assume a lack of motivation on a character's part when you haven't played through the game. Right? We've been through this. You're not in a position to comment on character motivation.

I told you that it's bullshit for no character at all to be interesting until 20 hours into the game.  Yes, I can only talk about what I had seen but what is my motivation for sticking with the game for 20 hours when as far as I know no character except for Ashe, who the game makes me hate, and Basche, who is beyond boring?

Your affinity for a character has nothing to do with their motivation. When you spew out "Balthier has no reason to be there" over and over, you're just trumpeting your own ignorance like it's some kind of war wound. This is not only in bad taste, it's just wrong.

If he does have some kind of motivation, they should at least learn how to foreshadow, but then if they were clever enough how to figure out foreshadowing the game might have had a decent story.

As it stands, at about the 15-20 mark, Balthier is a pirate who is just tagging along because SE needed an interesting character.  He gives no hint at all other than he's just there.  Now in well written story I might assume something would be relealed to me later, but since every other character had about the same motivation it is easily just written off as bad storytelling.
