(edit: I just saw that you do have VC SMB3) Do you know that you can suspend your progress on the VC by going to the Wii menu instead of turning the console's power off? The system will create a save point that will be erased the next time you turn your system on. It's kind of the equivalent of keeping your system on until you play it again (which is exactly what I used to do for SMB3 on the nes)
Seriously, the game gives you unlimited continues, and there are some truly well-designed levels later on. It's worth checking out.
Also, if that's the worse game you've ever played, you're doing really well!
