Well considering the argument is : HD consoles with great features and graphics versus the Wii?  Yes the HD consoles have won.  Considering if there was only Microsoft or a PS3 a lot more people would own a PS3 or 360.  Considering 'good' graphics consoles (With 90%+ similar libraries ) have proven to sell more than the Wii has.  True or False?  We aren't arguing who is the most successful company.  We are arguing what is the most successful philosophy?

And Sony and MS will be making money this gen in the long run.  The only reason I disregarded the Microsoft RROD issue of costs is because that in no way is it a reflection of normal cost.  That was a total hardware/design blunder on their part, not a cost because of moving to HD or having better graphics.    Faulty Hardware is Faulty Hardware whenever it happens.  The Wii just as easily could have had faulty hardware and had to do similar things.  RROD isn't even a factor in this discussion.

You're being really premature on both points.

The Wii sold more than both HD consoles combined in both 2007 and 2008. In that period, Nintendo has done nothing to stimulate demand other than release new software and peripherals and ship more hardware to retailers. MS and Sony have slashed prices, tossed out a dizzying number of SKUs, and subsidized both consumers and developers in an attempt to gain market share. Their deserate efforts and the 360s head start are the only reasons the Wii hasn't overrun the HD install base already, but it's only a matter of time now.

As to the second point, Sony and MS have both spent billions on this gen. Sony is two years in and has yet to make any money on the PS3. MS is three years in and posted what, a $150 million profit last quarter (with no way of knowing how much of that came from Zune, PC peripherals, and Mac Office sales)? At this rate it will take MS 10 years to break even on the Xbox endeavor. They both have a very long way to go.

I'm not so sure that you can seperate the RRoD issue from the expense of high power hardware. After all, the design flaw is that they failed to properly design the console to deal with the extreme heat of its powerful processors. If Microsoft hadn't built such a powerful machine, the heat dissipation of the original 360 design might have been adequate.
