Upscaling will not bring more detail. Say you have 1 brown pixel at a smaller resolution, when displayed on a tv at a higher resolution, say at 4 times the size. Without upscaling, this one pixel would then need to be a brown 4x4 area at the higher resolution. Upscaling would use the neighboring pixels to make a guess at what colors to fill in that 4x4 area instead of making them all brown. Most likely the guesswork is done by interpolation. Upscaling is not an attempt to bring more detail(that is impossible) .
