I'm sure the controls will just take a bit of getting used to, I had similar frustrations with BioShock having what I thought at the time as being a really awkward layout. Also, off the top of my head is Racedriver GRID's default controls. But now that I'm used to them it's almost second nature, and in the case of GRID I actually use that same layout now on other driving games if I'm not playing with the driving wheel.
Just give it time, ECC, I'm they'll grow on you eventually.
