Well, the maps aren't great, but my biggest problem was with the AI. That, and I hate the translocator, it completely destroys tactics or strategy. And most of the vehicles handle like crap. I could go on... but even if all these things were OK, a game should be fun out of the box. You shouldn't have to wait for the community to make it fun. Basically, I've had a lot more fun playing TFC, BF1942, and even the original UT than UT2K4. |
Sounds like you made up your mind and thats fine, you gotta play what you like and I don't think anyone should spend money they aren't going to get full enjoyment out of (at least when it comes to their video games). But I will say almost all if not all servers disable translocators (thank god) and by playing online you sidestep the AI. There are also some custom vehicles but a lot of maps do use the normal ones so out of the things you mentioned the vehicle problems are the one that remains.
As far as the community thing goes, for guys like Twestern and I the building of the community is fun. So in that regard its a taste thing at least at the beginning. If you have a friend who picks it up, I would say give it a play at his place 6 months after release on some of the busier servers and you will know usually inside of 60min if you are going to like it.
But outside of that it sounds like you are unlikely to enjoy the new version so I definitely wouldn't recommend spending money on it just to try it
