The people who wanted those games generally bought them, just as the people who want Guitar Hero buy that. You can't blame consumers for buying what they want to buy, truth is those games had a narrow market, it's true for many many games that are appreciated greatly by a small number of consumers.
I can't suddenly expect everyone to buy into my preferred genre, which is an extremely small niche, I buy it because I like it.
You also have to remember that the consumer is also taking a risk when buying an unknown product. I recently decided to buy a couple of DS games because they were widely recommended by both critics and gamers on sites like this, Chrono Trigger and Fire Emblem: SD. I regret both. I'll still buy the odd unknown game(by which I mean something I don't get to try out first), but you can't be surprised when I spend most of my money on games I safely know I will enjoy.
A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
