The wholesale cost between a 20gb drive and a 60gb is very small, maybe $10 tops. Yet the price difference in consoles is $100. That's a pretty big pill for Sony to swallow. They would have to sell a lot of games to make up the difference. I don't believe the decision was made on inventory, but revenue. It's almost impossible for them to make money with a $499 PS3 at this time. |
The 20gb also didn't have a WiFi antenna or flash memory slots. Throw in the fact the production is going to get more simple in the next couple of months, I bet a $500 model will be back soon.
My Top 5:
Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger
My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii
Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
