There is no other way to find out whether the game is AAA or not other than to look at its metascore.

Looking at sales figures is not an option because the gap between certain jRPG titles (FF, Pokemon) and niche games in the genre is way too big.

Judge it based on opinions of hardcore crowd is even worse idea. Such debates can last forever.

AAA = 90+ metascore. Simple as that. And we are only going to get a few console jRPG AAA titles this gen.

In reality AAA games are simply those games that receive the biggest budgets, the best developers and are most of the time part of a high quality series. Aka the #1 products of the industry. As a result of the bigger budgets, those will most of the time also receive high scores. But if RE5 scores lower than 90 on metacritic, it's still undeniably an AAA game. It's pretty weird to think otherwise.

Every system has its flaws. It's not like I am saying that metacritic always gives you the right idea of how good a game is. What I am saying is that there is no better way to judge whether the game is AAA or not.
