Most FPS's lack personality of the main character.

Very true, but Halo is considered the most popular, and I often hear Master Chief's name thrown around in "Favorite Character" discussions, which I think is absolutely ridiculous.

But with that said, characters from both Gears, Killzone, and Resistance fall under the same category.

I like Marcus Fenix kind of...But honestly, I think they do that so you feel more involved with the story. You're seeing the world through the characters eyes so you're supposed to feel like the person.

Master Chief and Marcus Fenix have characterization in spades for action games, especially First Person Shooters.

The only noteworth hero from modern FPSes who would fit under this particular trope is the apotheosis of all FPS heroes: Gordon Freeman.

And I will not talk bad about Gordon Freeman, sirs.
