Richard Bartle is known for being part of the team that worked on the original MUD back in the 70's and early 80's. The Multi-User-Dungeon was the first virtual world / online RPG ever and it's legacy still lives on as games such as Everquest or World of Warcraft.
One of his finest contributions was the Bartle test of gamer psychology.
