even though i have never liked it too much, i think gta 3 should be on the list. it was one of those earlier games where the player truly had complete freedom to run around and do whatever. of course i'm sure it is not the first of that kind, it definitely made it hell of popular. also smb should be on there. it was one of the big reasons for the industry's resurrection.
