I usually charge it when it gets around half way or sometimes on the last bar. I rarely use rumble so that usually helps to extend the time between charges.
I have a couple of six foot USB cables to extend the small one included with the PS3 so if I'm constantly playing like I was in the Killzone 2 beta for example, I can do both without a problem. Otherwise, I'll usually just plug it into my PC.
