Apex digital released a $99 DVD player in 2001 and quickly became the #1 stand alone DVD manufacturer in the world. I could be wrong but I believe that most of the $15 DVD players on the market today are rebranded Apex Digital products.The reason it would be such a big deal is that Apex Digital (and similar producers) can make electronics at amazingly low costs and destroy the profitability in these products.
The fact is that one of the main reasons Toshiba and Sony want such control over their formats is to prevent companies like Apex Digital from being able to produce players and undercut their prices; this means that (if successful) they would be able to maintain a $100 profit for years.
