I don't have a dual shock.... but I charge the batteries in my remote about once every 2 weeks, though it depends how often the IR pointer is used as to if it needs it more often.
Igenerally get about 30-40 hours, but with an IR heavy game (one that keeps it on all the time) it can be as low as 20, but really only Zelda and RE4 seem to drain it that fast.
Standard shop bought alkalines (non-rechargable) last about 5-10 hours longer... but of course they then have to be thrown away.
